Academic Interests:
Dr. Siddiqui's focus is to discover and characterize candidate genes and genetic mechanisms that affect lung endothelial permeability and homeostasis. By performing genetic screens in the nematode C. elegans and combining this work with a functional analysis in microvessel endothelial monolayer, he has previously identified novel components that regulate monolayer integrity and molecular flux into and across the endothelium. He also studies kinesin motors mediating vesicular traffic in endocytosis and exocytosis in endothelium. Currently he has established novel approaches of inquiry such as the role of micro-RNAs in hypoxia and lung injury. He is developing transgenic animal models to study myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) gene in which genetic variants have been identified by the Garcia Lab that affect African Americans and cause severe asthma.
